GCSE Composition workshop 6 - How to write for Drum Kit

by Liz and Tim @HuntSchoolMusic

Teaching the first term of composition at GCSE can be really tricky. It's a delicate balancing act of reinforcing, reassuring and encouraging increasing levels of student autonomy. We've tried all sorts of approaches but it has taken us until now to actually document six of our first term composing workshops. I'm sure we'll have changed our minds in another 9 months...

Does all music need a drum kit? No - but if you're going to do it, do it well. This workshop came about as the result of hearing countless sequenced drum parts written for eight limbed drummers playing mid-tom, cowbell and open hi-hat solos in 3 bar bursts every 25 bars. (You know the ones I mean.....) Bring this workshop to life, live from the drum kit with a student drummer or your VMT percussion specialist.
