GCSE (AQA) Music listening resources AOS 4 - British Music of Arnold, Britten, Maxwell-Davies and Tavener

by Liz Dunbar @HuntSchoolMusic

Like all musics of the 20th and 21st centuries, British musical styles and influences are vast and varied. There’s the influence of Western European history - German Romanticism, French Impressionism.   There’s the development of technology - the experimental, Avant Garde, film, TV. There’s 1000 years of religious music both Catholic and Protestant. There’s a sense of place - regional folk instruments, regional song, story telling, nationalism, patriotism, military music, brass bands. And there's the influence of musics from the Americas, from Africa, and Asia.

And since we're here, how do you ignore Vaughan Williams, Delius, Holst, Coleridge-Taylor, Tippett, Holst, Walton, Butterworth, Parry, Smyth, Weir, Lutyens, Panufnik, Portman, Wiseman, Maconchy, Beamish, Ades?

The following slides cover the 4 composers named in the AQA topic within Area of Study 4.

The playlist explores 20th century British Art/Classical Music more widely.
