GCSE (AQA) Music listening resources AOS 1 - Handel Coronation Anthems and Oratorios

by Liz Dunbar @HuntSchoolMusic

Handel was brilliant at reflecting a special occasion by writing music on a grand scale. He did it with 'Water Music', and he did it with 'Music for the Royal Fireworks', but he knocks it out of the park with 'Zadok the Priest' (Coronation Anthem no.1), which has been sung at every coronation since 1727. When you think it can't get any better, he goes on to write the epic oratorio 'Messiah' in 1741, which is still as popular today as it was almost 300 year ago, because of its theatrical drama and intensity.
